Southern Cross

A photograph of the Southern Cross, taken at the extremely fast F/1.4 focal ratio and using a diffuser filter to retain star colour.

This was my first night using the F/1.4 50mm for astrophotography. First impression was just how easy it is to focus using the F/1.4 rather than slower F/4 of my other lenses! Very easy in compaison.

The fast focal ratio on this lens has inroduced significant distortion. Stars are very illongated even 1/2 way from the centre to the edge, and of course even worse at the edge. The same field of view taken with the same lens at F/6.3 did not show any distortion. Next time I will aim for a compromise of perhaps F/2.8.

It's a shame the trees crept in on the right of frame, but the night was about having fun taking different shots in different places trying out different combinations of equipment, so I wasn't fussed enough to give up on the field of view just because of the trees.
