Nature: Birds

Nature Photography, focusing on that of Birds. Subjects include the Pelicans, Wedge Tail Eagles, Quail, Black Cockatoo, Pink and Gray Cockatoo.

Photography of birds is tricky at the best of times, I have found. They are usually hopping all over the place (if they are on the ground!) or flying erratically, or doing just about anything else including just simply turning their head the other way! .. to get out of having their photo taken. It can be infuriating!

Occasionally a situation presents its self where a good image can be captured of a feathered subject. This is usually when time permits for me the photographer to relax, sit patiently, enjoy the surroundings, and wait for the right opportunity.

For my bird photography I mostly use my Canon 70-200 F/4L lens, often with my 2x Tamron adaptor. I also sometimes use my partner's Canon 100-400 F/4-5.6L, of course only when she is not using it! Both lenses more often than not yield excellent images. The F/2.8 varieties would be nice but we are not in to carrying that kind of weight around.

I hope you enjoy this small collection of bird photography I have shown here on my website.

Purple Swamphen
A couple of Purple Swamphen standing in the shallow waters of Lake Leschenaultia. Their bright purple feathers and red beaks are amazingly vibrant and colourful.
Esperance Lakes - Birds
A particularly nice capture of two birds having a skwabble at Esperance Lakes Reserve.
Esperance Lakes - Silvereye
A photograph of a Silvereye bird at Esperance Lakes Nature Reserve.
Hooded Plover - Takeoff
This is an image of a Hooded Plover taking off from rock in the ocean near Hopetoun.
Gray Butcher Bird
This photograph shows a Gray Butcher Bird at Kokerbin Rock, Western Australia.
Kokerbin Rock - Popular Tree
There must be something special about this tree! Either that or the birds were just enjoying watching the nice sunset. Taken at Kokerbin Rock in Western Australia (wheatbelt region).
Bush Stone Curlew
This image shows a Bush Stone Curlew (sometimes written Bush Stonecurlew) in it's natural surroundings at Dryandra in Western Australia. The raw image shows great fine detail in the feathers and colouring of the bird (raw image not provided here).
Spinifex Pigeon
This is a photograph of a Spinifex Pigeon in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia, not far from Bruce Rock and Quairading, at Kokerbin Rock.

The Spinifex Pigeon was quite sensitive to my proximity, and keenly watching my every move.
Rufous Whistler (0594)
This is a photograph of a Rufous Whistler, not far from Kokerbin Rock in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia.
Rufous Whistler (0597)
This is a photograph of a Rufous Whistler, not far from Kokerbin Rock in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia.
Pelican (2777)
This is a photograph of a flock of Pelican at Streaky Bay in South Australia.

Of course, they were keenly watching the fishermen for their fair share of the feast!
Pelican (2785)
This is a photograph of a Pelican at Streaky Bay in South Australia.

I like to call this "heavy liftoff" of obvious reasons - pelican lift-off with dust being swept out from underneath. Just like a 747, this pelican looks far too big and awkward to fly!
Pelican (2787)
This is a photograph of a pelican flying through across the bay at Streaky Bay in South Australia.
Rufous Treecreeper
This is a photograph of a Rufous Treecreeper at Dryandra in Western Australia.

The Rufous Treecreeper moves quickly up and down trees, quickly hopping from tree to tree.
Restless Flycatcher
This is a photograph of a Restless Flycatcher bird at Dryandra, in Western Australia.

This is a great bird to photograph, challenging but possible to catch in mid flight, and more than challenging to actually get near to.
Painted Button-quail
This is a photo of the Painted Button-quail in Dryandra, Western Australia.

Taken through the windscreen of the car this is not a particularly good photograph, but the best achieved. They are not the hardest bird to photograph, but I was on the wrong side of them for lighting.

Ground dwelling birds they make only short flight, which they unfortunately did to get away from me.

Given more time, they would be a relatively easy photographic target, so hopefully I will com
Wedge Tail Eagle
This photograph shows a Wedge Tailed Eagle circling nearby at Dryandra, Western Australia.

There was a second Wedge Tail with this one, out of frame, circling near each other.
Pardalote
A Pardalote collecting nesting material at Lake Leschenaultia.
Duck
A duck at Lake Leschenaultia.
