Research Astronomy

Astronomy research is something which I am particularly interested in, and actively participating in.

In 2007, 2008 and 2009 I have participated in various research projects with amateur and professional astronomers. They have included:

  • Occultations of Pluto & satellites of Pluto (several events)
  • Occultation of Quaoar
  • Comet 8P/Tuttle observations on an ongoing basis for 2-3 months

The equipment I typically use for research activities is:

  • Meade LX200 12" (focal length of 2180mm in the configuration I have it set up)
  • SBIG ST7-ME

The equipment I use lends its self well to:

  • Observations of faint objects (due to the high sensitivity of the ST7 combined with the medium aperture of the 12" LX200
  • Observations of small fields of view
  • All night/early morning observations, due to the automation capabilities of my observatory setup
  • Ongoing observations over a period of weeks/months, again due to the automation capabilities of my obervatory and the fact that I am happy to persist with one task for a considerable length of time.

If you are lookng for an amateur astronomer to help with a research project or just recording of a specific event, Please contact me and see if I am interested. Most likely I will be keen to help.

For the purpose of cosidering research prospects, be aware that I am located in Perth, Western Australia (Southern Hemisphere, Lat 31s, Long 117).
