Astronomy Camera Manufacturers

It can sometimes be hard to track down all the manufacturers for a particular type of product. In the case of astronomy camera's there are several tucked away in the big world of the internet that can be hard to find. Here I try to provide a listing of those you should check out.

Astronomy Camera Manufacturers

It can sometimes be hard to track down all the manufacturers for a particular type of product. In the case of astronomy camera's there are several tucked away in the big world of the internet that can be hard to find. If you're considering purchasing a new astronomy camera I would recommend you check out these manufacturers and see how their models compare for your purpose:

Manufacturer Cameras suitable to bright Solar System objects? Cameras suitable to Deep Sky objects? Price Range
Meade Yes (LPI) Yes (DSI and DSI Pro) Low
Celestron Yes (NexImage) No Low
Orion Yes (Starshoot Solar System) Yes (Starshoot Deep Sky) Low
Canon Sun and Moon only Yes, although limited sensitivity. Medium
Nikon Sun and Moon only Yes, although limited sensitivity. Medium
Hutech Sun and Moon only Yes (a preferred choice) Medium-High
QHY Sun and Moon only Yes Medium-High
Imaging Source Yes (a preferred choice) Yes, although limited - no cooling. Low - Medium
StellaCam Yes Yes, although limited. Medium
Lumenera Yes (a preferred choice) Yes, although limited. Medium
SBIG No Yes (a preferred choice) Medium-High
Apogee No Yes (a preferred choice) High
Fingerlakes No Yes High
Starlight Xpress No Yes Medium-High
Logitech Webcams Yes No Low
Phillips Webcams Yes (a preferred choice) No Low

In the above table I use the terms Low, Medium and High for pricing. What do I mean by this? Simplistically:

Low: Under AU$1000
Medium: About AU$1000 - AU$5000
High: About AU$5000 upwards

Not all astronomy cameras are expensive. There are options from many manufacturers starting from $100 and easily falling within the $1000 limit of "Low". So look around and you may be surprised. On the other hand, if you have the money there are plenty of exciting options available from the likes of SBIG, Apogee and Fingerlakes in the $5000 - $40,000 price range (half your luck!).
